Improving Understanding to Provide Highest Quality Care
More than 25 clinicians representing nearly every program at Catholic Charities participated in a day-long workshop, “Creating Trauma Informed Systems of Care in Mental Health Settings,” this week. The workshop was presented by Julie Roebuck, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty five years of experience working with multiple types of traumas, including but not limited to domestic violence, sexual abuse, child fatalities, life threatening illnesses and developmental abandonment /neglect. Throughout her career she has developed multiple programs such as the Batterers Intervention and Assessment Center in Newark Court System, and the Morris County Sexual Assault Center in Morristown, New Jersey.
Participants expanded the critical tools they already employ in assessing the treatment needs of clients with mental illness presenting with trauma. The work shop also provided a review of best practice considerations for trauma informed assessments, cultural competency, clinical interventions and resources for providers who work with mentally ill communities.
This workshop is one of a planned series of trainings aimed at improving all agency employees’ understanding of trauma.
